How to Identify Your Thermocouple Type

It is important to be able to tell what type of thermocouple you have when changing out old or bad thermocouples. If the wrong thermocouple or wrong wire is used, the controller's temperature readings will not be accurate. This can cause a major overfire if the controller is connected to a thermocouple type it isn't set for. If you are unsure about what type of thermocouple you have, you can give us a call or contact your local kiln dealer for assistance.

The Two Main Thermocouple Types

The two main types of thermocouples used with Bartlett controllers are Type K and Type S:

  • Type K:
    • Red wire (-) and yellow wire (+)
    • Yellow sheath around the extension wire
  • Type S:
    • Red wire (-) and black wire (+)
    • Green sheath around the extension wire

It is important to use the correct wire with each thermocouple type, or it will cause problems with temperature readings.
