Thermocouple offsets are a useful tool in zone-controlled kilns, allowing you to balance heat work by slightly raising or lowering the temperature indicated by each thermocouple. This is especially helpful if one zone tends to lag behind the others or when a thermocouple is worn but not yet ready for replacement.

Unlike cone offsets, thermocouple offsets affect all cone-fire and vary-fire programs, not just a single program or specific cone value. In kilns with multiple thermocouples, each one can have a unique offset, up to a maximum of 50°F. A negative offset lowers the indicated temperature, resulting in more heat work, while a positive offset increases the indicated temperature, reducing heat work.

How to Program a Thermocouple Offset (RTC1000 or V6CF Controllers):

  1. RTC1000 only: Press the ENTER/START key. (Skip this step for the V6CF.)
  2. Press the MENU key until "TCOS" is displayed.
  3. Press ENTER.
    • For a single-zone kiln, the controller will flash °FOS and the current offset.
    • For multiple zones, TC1 will appear on the screen.
  4. Set the offset:
    • Single thermocouple: Enter the desired degrees of offset.
    • Multiple zones: Press ENTER until the desired thermocouple is displayed, then type in the offset.
      • Negative offset (more heat work): Type 9,0 followed by the degrees (up to 50°F).
      • Positive offset (less heat work): Enter the degrees (up to 50°F).
  5. Press ENTER to save. The controller will return to IDLE.

Thermocouple offsets can be a powerful tool when used correctly. Remember, if you’ve set an offset to compensate for an aging thermocouple, reset it to zero when the thermocouple is replaced.
