Using Zone Control for More Even Kiln Heating

Using zone control can be a great feature for kiln users. With 3 independently controlled zones or sections, you get a more even firing throughout each section. When only one thermocouple is used, generally the temperature reading comes from the center of the kiln and all sections are given the same amount of power.

How Zone Control Works

Using zone control, the controller gets three different temperature readings and can adjust each zone so it receives the correct amount of power needed. If one zone is lagging, the power to the other zones can be lowered to allow it to catch up to the set point. Plus, if a thermocouple fails, you can continue with the firing and your projects won’t be held up.

Advantages to Setting Your Kiln Up for Zone Control:

  • 3 independently controlled zones
  • Ability to continue firings if 1 or even 2 thermocouples fail
  • Uniformed heating throughout the entire kiln
  • Adjustable offsets for each of the 3 thermocouples
  • Slowed ramping when any zone lags too far behind the set point temperature
