Back-to-School Kiln Maintenance Tips
1. Inspect the Kiln Interior
Start by visually inspecting the inside of your kiln. Look for:
• Drooping or cracked elements: These can affect the kiln’s ability to heat evenly.
• Damaged kiln shelves: Replace or repair any shelves that are cracked or worn to prevent accidents during firing.
2. Check Your Thermocouples
Thermocouples are critical for accurate temperature readings. Before the school year begins:
• Ensure thermocouples are not cracked, bent, or discolored.
• Replace thermocouples if they show signs of wear and tear.
• Verify proper placement: The tip should extend about 1.5 inches into the kiln chamber and be centrally located.
3. Run a Full Power Test
A Full Power Test is a quick and effective way to ensure your kiln is heating properly. This test helps identify issues with relays, elements, or voltage. If you notice dark spots on the elements or sections of the kiln that aren’t heating, it’s time to replace worn or broken parts.
