What Does a FAIL Message Mean?

A FAIL message on your Bartlett controller indicates an issue with either the thermocouple or the controller itself. It’s important to identify the root cause to resolve the problem quickly.

Types of FAIL Messages

Steady FAIL Message: Indicates that all thermocouples have failed.
Flashing FAIL Message: Alternates with TC1, TC2, or TC3, indicating which specific thermocouple has failed.

How to Troubleshoot a FAIL Message

To determine whether the issue lies with the thermocouple or the controller, perform a Thermocouple Bypass Test:

  1. Disconnect Power: Turn off the kiln and unplug it.
  2. Access the Controller: Unscrew the four screws securing the controller to the control box and pull the controller toward you.
  3. Disconnect the Thermocouple: Remove the thermocouple that has failed.
  4. Place a Jumper: Insert a jumper (e.g., a paperclip or wire) between the two screws where the thermocouple connects.
  5. Power the Kiln: Plug the kiln back in and press ENTER to clear the FAIL message.
    • If the FAIL message doesn’t return, the thermocouple needs to be replaced.
    • If the FAIL message persists, the controller may need to be sent in for repair.

When to Replace Your Thermocouple

Thermocouples are one of the most frequently replaced parts in a kiln. If you encounter a FAIL message, having a spare thermocouple on hand can save you time and frustration. Learn more about the importance of keeping a spare thermocouple in our Spare Thermocouple Guide.
