Kiln Firing Basics

Having Trouble Programming to a Certain Temperature?

If your controller won’t program to a higher temperature, the issue is often the kiln’s factory-set top temperature limit.

Why the Controller Won’t Go Higher

Are you having problems getting your controller to program to your desired temperature? Usually, the cause is something as simple as the top temperature setting on the controller. It’s always important to know the capability, or maximum temperature, of your kiln before programming a firing. Our controllers come from the factory with the top temperature set to the kiln manufacturer’s requested temperature.

If you attempt to program a temperature higher than the controller’s top temperature setting, the controller will not allow it. This is intentional and serves as a safety feature to prevent firing beyond the kiln’s specifications. Limiting the maximum programmable temperature helps protect the kiln from operating hotter than it can safely handle.

How to Check Your Kiln’s Top Temperature

The best way to determine your kiln’s rated top temperature is to check the information placard, which is often located on the side of the kiln. You can also contact your kiln manufacturer directly for this information.

If your kiln is rated for a higher temperature than the controller currently allows, you should speak with your kiln manufacturer about adjusting the factory settings. Keep in mind that changing factory settings may void your warranty, so adjustments should only be made with the kiln manufacturer’s approval.
